“Witch” Burger’s Best?

After a two year quest to find the best burger in town and multiple visits to all the major contenders (as well as many wildcard restaurants) I’m pleased to announce that the best burger in Houston is right here in the Heights. And no, it’s not the place you’re thinking of (Hubcap Grill). Or the other place you’re thinking of (Down House). While both of these establishments do in fact serve a top-notch burger, it is the general consensus in my family that the absolute, hands-down, best burger in Houston comes from none other than Witchcraft Tavern, a small strip-center restaurant on 11th Street near the intersection with Shepherd Drive.

Witchcraft Tavern is the newest offering from Delicious Concepts, a small restaurant chain responsible for favorite Heights dining spots like Lola, Pink’s Pizza, and Shepherd Park. There are several burgers on the menu, and after trying them all, we can definitively say that they are all fantastic, but the Stilton Burger has a special place in our hearts. Topped with hickory maple bacon, sautéed mushrooms, balsamic-glazed onions, and blueberry Stilton, the Stilton Burger is the pinnacle of burger perfection. The blueberry cheese sounds strange, but it works. Trust me. Of course, no amount of fancy toppings can disguise a mediocre patty or lackluster bun, so Witchcraft Tavern starts with a thick, juicy patty of 80/20 Angus beef and wraps the whole thing up in a soft, slightly sweet brioche bun from Kraftsmen Cafe. The whole package goes together perfectly and is complemented by an order of freshly cut french fries. (You can also get truffle fries as an appetizer, and you should. They are the stuff dreams are made of.)

If blueberry Stilton doesn’t sound appealing, you can choose from a plain cheeseburger with cheddar or Swiss, as well as several more inventive options topped with chili, coleslaw, or andouille sausage. You can’t go wrong, really. There are many other things on the menu besides burgers, but to be honest, the burgers are so slap-yo-mama fantastic we haven’t gotten around to sampling any of them.  Monday is burger and a pint night, where a burger, fries, and a pint of anything on draft can be had for only $10. I think you know where to find me Monday around dinner time!
