After years of requests from Heights residents to open a new, larger H-E-B store, the beloved Texas grocery chain confirmed in November after the passage of laws that enabled take-home beer and wine sales in the Heights that the former home of Fiesta on North Shepherd would become a fancy new two-story H-E-B store complete with parking garage. As if that wasn’t exciting enough news for Heights-area H-E-B aficionados, now a second Heights area new store has been announced, this one located just south of the official boundary of the Heights on Washington and Heights Blvd.
The second new H-E-B store will be part of a mixed-use development including two floors for the H-E-B (one of which may or may not be a parking garage), 232 apartments spread across five floors, about 37,000 square feet of office space, and a few other small stores, yet to be announced. The complex will be located on the Archstone Memorial Heights apartment property. The area has been nicknamed “Buffalo Heights” owing to its location between the Heights and Buffalo Bayou.
Construction will begin sometime in 2017, but an exact time frame has not been announced. H-E-B is also reportedly looking for land in Garden Oaks to develop an even greater presence in the Heights and surrounding neighborhoods. For those who have been driving to the Bunker Hill store for their H-E-B fix, this is welcome news!
