New Dual-Concept Restaurant Open on Studewood

A new dual-concept restaurant has opened in the former home of Stella Sola at 1001 Studewood. The new enterprise is the brainchild of Hernan Garcia and is called Black and White. White is a casual, Mexican-inspired seafood restaurant, while Black is a upscale Mediterranean. The space has been empty for quite a while, since Stella Sola shuttered three years ago. The allegedly cursed location was previously home to a fine dining restaurant called Bedford. While other restauranteurs have shied away from the “cursed” space despite its desirable location, Garcia sees it as an opportunity and is unconcerned with the building’s past.

White features oysters (raw and cooked), tacos, and tostadas. The restaurant’s logo features an octopus, which patrons can enjoy in several different preparations. Dishes generally run $10-15 While Black is on the fancier side, it’s still pretty reasonably priced. Most dishes are under $40, and there are options for groups to share. The house special paella feeds 4-6 people and will run your group $150.

Both concepts will feature a full bar, where traditional cocktails are served with a unique twist. General manager Eric Anderson created the cocktail menu, including his take on a Negroni Royale, featuring Campari, sweet red vermouth, and sparkling white wine, and a drink featuring roasted blueberries, bourbon and basil.

It’s not everyday a grand opening brings two new restaurants to the neighborhood! Here’s hoping that Black and White overcomes the “curse” of their location and makes it for the long haul.
