Houston is growing and changing like crazy thanks to an influx of new residents who arrived in search of greener economic pastures, and East Downtown, (EaDo, to the cool kids) is the latest area to experience a major revitalization. The next big project underway for the Third Ward neighborhood is a massive $33.6 million renovation of Emancipation Park, which will provide a health center, basketball gym, classrooms, a baseball field, sculptures, and small pavilions, among other amenities. The existing pool house and community center will get a major facelift as well.
The project is under the direction of celebrated architect Phillip Freelon. Freelon is most famous for designing the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Houston’s own M2L Associates will be in charge of landscaping the green space.
Emancipation Park is a historic 10-acre piece of land purchased by freed slaves in 1870 as a dedicated site for Juneteenth celebrations to take place. During segregation, the area surrounding the park was a hub of community and business activities for the African-American community. The neighborhood has struggled in past years, with most of the small businesses shuttering, but is now experiencing a renaissance. New home construction in particular is taking off in the area. M.
