After months of delays and permit frustrations, highly anticipated Hugs & Donuts finally held their grand opening April 6. The gourmet donut shop on 19th Street (right next to Fat Cat Creamery) is owned by Jason Hill and Matt Opaleski, the geniuses behind the H-Town StrEATS food truck. In addition to typical offerings like glazed donuts, donut holes, and apple fritters, the shop features a rotating menu of specialty donuts like coconut lime, birthday cake, and creme brûlée. Not one for sweets? Try one of their delicious gourmet kolaches. Flavors include barbecue brisket, boudin sausage, lox, and more.
All those donuts will probably make you thirsty. Luckily, Hugs & Donuts offers Katz coffee and espresso, as well as milk on tap in plain, chocolate, and strawberry varieties. The shop is open from 7:00-3:00 daily. You’ll find the best selection if you go early, since specialty flavors are made in limited quantities and when they’re gone, they’re gone.
