Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

This year’s Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo cook-off is in full swing, lasting through the weekend. An astounding 250 teams will compete for bragging rights, belt buckles, and trophies in several categories, including chicken, beef, and ribs. This isn’t merely a local competition, either. This year’s competition includes teams from the UK, Japan, and all over the state an nation. While it’s too late to compete, there’s still time to get tickets for this days-long beer and bbq bacchanalia. If you’ve never been before, cook-off is a something of a giant bbq block party for the entire city, replete with lots of cold beer, country music concerts, and of course, truly incomprehensible amounts of food.

Country music favorites Kevin Fowler, Pat Green, and Cory Morrow will perform this weekend, among others. Tickets aren’t always easy to come by and parking can be a nightmare, but the experience is worth any hassle you may have to put up with. The rodeo cook-off is just about the most Houston thing imaginable, and attending at least one rodeo event should be on every Houstonian’s bucket list. If you happen to have guests in town to visit during March, don’t even think about letting them leave without taking them to the rodeo. Even if you don’t have tickets to anything specific, it’s still fun to wander around the carnival and see the prize-winning Livestock Show animals, art displays, and other exhibits that can be accessed with a general admission ticket.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo kicked off its 43rd year today with the annual Go Texan Day, so if you noticed more people than usual rocking cowboy boots at work this casual Friday, that’s why. Cook-off events last through the weekend, and the HLSR parade will take place tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. in downtown. Rodeo events including barrel racing, bull riding, roping and more will begin March 1 and last until March 20.

Of course, no discussion of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo would be complete without talking about the concerts. Nightly performances will take place each night following the conclusion of the competitive rodeo events. This year’s performers include Kenny Chesney, Kid Rock, Jason Derulo, The Band Perry, Miranda Lambert, and many, many more.

Save yourself exorbitant parking fees and traffic headaches by taking public transit to Reliant Center for any rodeo events you decide to participate in. There are park and ride shuttles, trams, and Metrorail routes in place to support rodeo traffic and alleviate congestion at and around Reliant Center.
