If you’ve been to the Heights post office lately, you probably noticed a sign on the door stating that the land will soon be sold and the location closed. The USPS has been struggling financially in recent years and as a result, post office branches deemed “excess” are being sold to offset lost revenue. The shaded one-acre lot on the corner of Yale and 11th will be sold at market value, and postal operations at this site will be consolidated with the T.W. Houston office two miles away.
No date has been announced yet for the closing of the post office. Rumors of the potential closing have been reported since September, but were not confirmed as fact until recently. The large lot size and desirable location will certainly draw a horde of developers looking to turn the spot into prime retail or restaurant space. It’s uncommon for such a large lot to become available in the Heights, and what happens to the land now is anybody’s guess. Because the post office is located in a historic district, any development plans must be approved by the Archeological and Historical Commission, so don’t get too concerned about the land turning into apartments or townhomes. Local residents are torn between being sad to see this fixture of the Heights community go and excitement about the possibility of a great new restaurant in the area. Only time will tell what will become of the land, but we will be watching the story and updating as details emerge.
