It’s hard not to notice the constant change underway in Houston, whether you see it as progress or the destruction of our history. It seems like every day bulldozers flatten an old home or a decades-old building is imploded to make way for more apartments, town homes, and shopping centers. While most residents have accepted these changes as inevitable, some have committed to preserving Houston’s history.
Dominic Yap is on a mission to save historic homes in the First Ward, once house at a time. Yap purchases the homes and painstakingly repairs them with original materials and authentic fixtures and framing from the time period they were constructed. As a part of the First Ward Heritage Group, he and realtor Rob Griffith strive to maintain as much as possible of the city’s past for future generations. The group’s motto is “respectfully restored,” and they are currently working on homes seven and eight of their restoration campaign.Click the link below to watch the video of the amazing transformation of a recent restoration project on Shearn Street.
