Houston is growing by leaps and bounds, and the city’s already stella restaurant scene is no exception. Zagat recently published a list of the twenty most anticipated restaurants opening this fall, and several of them are right here in the Heights. Here are the best and brightest new nearby places to eat opening in the coming months.
Lee’s Fried Chicken and Donuts
Opening in late August in the former home of Church’s Chicken at 601 Heights Boulevard, Lee’s Fried Chicken and Donuts will offer gourmet fried chicken, a rotating assortment of donut flavors, and homemade biscuits. The restaurant is the brainchild of the F.E.E.D. Tx Restaurant Group, which operates Liberty Kitchen and BRC Gastropub.
Treadsack Restaurant Group is the company behind Heights favorites Down House and D&T Drive Inn, and in mid-September their long-awaited new restaurant, Hunky Dory, will finally open at 1901 N. Shepherd Drive. The 4,500 sq. Ft. British-American pub will offer a full bar concentrating on whiskey, and a wood-fired grill. Chef Richard Knight of Feast is in charge of the kitchen, so expect the food to be worth the lengthy wait for this grand opening.
Speaking of Treadsack Restaurant Group, the company will also be opening a seafood restaurant called Bernadine’s, adjacent to Hunky Dory. Bernadine’s will feature fresh Gulf seafood, whole fish, house-made boudin, and a raw bar. I can’t wait to visit during oyster season! Look for Bernadine’s to open in mid-September.
Fishmonger and chef PJ Stoops has been providing seafood to Houston’s best restaurants for years, and now he’s opening his own hotly-anticipated restaurant, located at 4721 N. Main St. Foreign Correspondents will offer a menu of Northern Thai cuisine, complete with footnotes on the menu to help Thai food newbies understand what they are ordering. Foreign Correspondents open in mid-September.
The Durham House Cajun and Craft
The former home of Woodrow’s Heights is currently undergoing a major renovation and will reopen September 17 reborn as the The Durham House Cajun and Craft. The menu will feature seasonal Louisiana and South Texas-inspired dishes heavy on the Gulf seafood. Never tasted fried alligator? Get ready to change that. Durham House will be located at 1200 Durham Drive.
Morgan Weber and Ryan Pera of Revival Market and Coltivare will be opening this modern icehouse on Yale at 11th Street in late September. The former Shell gas station will retain the character of its exterior, while adding a large outdoor patio to seat 200. House-made whiskey will be on offer, as well as frozen cocktails, mixed drinks, and up to forty varieties of beer. A food truck will be on site to serve tacos, queso, and guacamole from Revival Market. 8-Row Flint will open in late September, just in time for the weather to become pleasant enough to sit out on that shiny new patio.
Bored with all the local breakfast options? You won’t be for long. Morningstar is a breakfast, lunch, and coffee joint opening in late fall at 4721 Main Street. Priscilla Nguyen of Blacksmith and Sam Phan of Donald’s Donuts are creating the menu, which will feature a glazed yeast donut with local honey as a house specialty. Greenway Coffee & Tea’s David Buehrer and Ecky Prabanto created the concept.
