You’ve probably been to (or at least heard about) Thursday night bingo at SPJST (Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas) Lodge 88, but you might not have known the lodge is a Czech cultural society. This weekend Lodge 88 is hosting Czech Fest, a celebration of Czech culture, food, and music. Whether you already have an appreciation for all things Czech or are completely clueless and interested in changing that, it’s sure to be a good time!
What To Except
Czech Fest will feature kolaches, polka music, games, and beer. The lodge’s own SPJST Orchestra and Czech Chorus will perform, as well as Al Sulak & the Country Sounds and Adrian’s Fault. Like the organization itself, the festival is very kid-friendly. There will be a costume parade for kiddos, a bounce house, carnival games, face painting, and relay races.
When & Where
SPJST Lodge 88 is located at 1435 Beall Street. Czech Fest runs from 11:30-6:00 on Saturday, October 21. Tickets are $15 for adults, free for kids 17 and under, and $7 for seniors over 65.
About SPJST Lodge 88
SPJST Lodge 88 holds monthly meetings, weekly Bingo night, and frequent dances, concerts, and special events. The stated goal of the lodge is to keep alive the customs, language, and traditions of their Czech forbearers, and while the group is open to anybody and you don’t have to have Czech heritage to join, most members do.
What Else Does Lodge 88 Offer?
Can’t make Czech Fest? Be sure to visit another time for Thursday night bingo! Guests are allowed to bring their own food, wine and liquor (beer is sold by the lodge) and games start at 6:00. Hundreds of people flock to the lodge each week and it’s one of our very favorite Heights traditions. Burgers, hot dogs, and other concession-stand type food is sold on site. A book of 10 bingo cards will only run you $5, so it’s a super cheap and fun way to spend the evening, and prizes range from around $50 all the way to $600!
