This year’s HEB Thanksgiving Day Parade will begin on Thursday at 9:00 a.m., marking the 66th anniversary of this time-honored Houston tradition. The parade features floats, balloons, marching bands, artistic performances, and live entertainment, delighting more than 200,000 parade-goers each year. The parade route starts on Smith Street at the intersection with Lamar, and will travel north to Walker, east to Milam, south to Pease, west to Louisiana, north to Clay, west to Smith, and finally will head north to the termination point at Smith and Dallas. In addition to watching the parade, visitors can purchase snacks from food trucks and shop from a selection of vendors who will be present all along the route.
This year’s performances include several high school and college marching bands, the case of TUTS a Christmas Story, artists of the the Houston Ballet, the Apache Bells, and ahtletes from the International Weightlifting Federation. The theme of the parade is “Houston on Parade” and there are segments focusing on Houston’s artistic community, athletics, family fun, and global influences. As always, Tom Turkey and Santa and the reindeer will be there to kick off the holiday season.
Parking is available at the Theater District Parking Garage and Houston Chronicle Parking Garage. Metro busses will be running on their holiday schedule for those who want to avoid parking. Fees apply for parking, but there is no admission charge to watch the parade. Bring your own lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the show in comfort. The route totals 20 city blocks, so there will be plenty of space to sit down. Before you put the turkey in the oven, come out and enjoy the parade as a family!
